Community Activities

ADMINISTRATIVE PROFESSIONALS DAY GIFTS (April)—A new event in 2004, the Jaycees put together gift bags and marketed them to businesses to purchase for their special administrative professional. Volunteers are needed to put the bags together and deliver them to local businesses on Administrative Professionals Day.

ANNUAL SCHOLARSHIP AWARD (April) – One Scholarship is given to a local high school senior who will be attending a college in the state of Iowa. Volunteers are needed to evaluate the applications and essays.

ANNUAL SANDBOX DRIVE (May)—The Jaycees build and deliver sandboxes to houses and then fill them with sand. Volunteers are needed to help build the sandboxes and deliver the sand on a Saturday in May. Local businesses supply the building materials, sand, and delivery trucks.

GARAGE SALE FUNDRAISER (May) – A new project in 2006. Volunteers are needed to donate items, collect items from friends and family, set up for the sale, and work the sale.

CANOE RACE/FUN RUN (JUNE)—The event occurs on a Saturday morning. It begins at the Main Street Bridge in Cedar Falls and finishes at the Waterloo Boathouse. This 7.5 mile race is the longest running canoe race in Iowa. A committee is needed to plan the event and arrange for sponsors, vendors, and to secure permission and insurance for the event. Volunteers are needed to register canoeists, time races and help with medal presentations.

SENIOR PROJECT (Summer) – New project in 2007. Haven’t set a date yet, but we plan to mingle in with a nursing home and play Bingo with the elderly for a portion of the day.

4 TH OF JULY FIREWORKS (July)—This event takes place on the first Saturday of July in downtown Waterloo. It is one of the largest moneymakers for our chapter and requires a separate committee to plan the event. Volunteers are needed to serve on the committee, check ID’s, sell beer tickets, pour beer, and clean up after the event.

WATERLOO OPEN (July)—This golf tournament is the largest professional golf tournament in the state of Iowa and spans over 4 days with more than 700 professional and amateur golfers participating. The Open also requires a separate planning committee of Jaycees. In addition volunteers are needed to work in concessions and merchandise areas and provide other miscellaneous assistance over the weekend.

MAKE A DIFFERENCE DAY (Oct)- The organization chooses a needed community activity to complete. Volunteers are needed to complete the community project. A different project is chosen every year.

KIWANNIS POPCORN PROJECT (Oct) – Partnering with our local Kiwannis chapter we pop Kettle Corn to be sold outside of a local retail center. Proceeds go right back in to the community for community or individual development activities.

NATIONAL CATTLE CONGRESS PROJECT (Sept) – New project in 2006. Assist with parking for the four day event in Waterloo. We also transport elderly and physically challenged onto Cattle Congress grounds.

GIFT OF GIVING (Dec)—Held the first Saturday in December, this event is one of the most popular. Jaycees and community volunteers help approximately 90 underprivileged kids shop for Christmas gifts for their family members, wrap the gifts and then they share breakfast. Volunteers are needed to help kids shop, wrap gifts, and prepare breakfast.

KID’S HELPING KID’S PROJECT (Dec) – This project is held in conjunction with Blain’s Farm and Fleet. We receive a $300 gift card from Blain’s to use to benefit children in the community. We choose a different group to benefit every year. Volunteers are sometimes needed to shop for the group/organization that is chosen.

SOCIAL ACTIVITIES

SUPER BOWL PARTY (Jan/Feb)—Hosted by “mature” Jaycee, Steve Halbach, Jaycees have gathered for years to watch the Super Bowl and enjoy the unique theme that Steve has each year, food and beverages provided.

HOCKEY NIGHT (Feb/Mar)—Watch the Waterloo Black Hawks as a group at Young arena. Purple Region Activity

LASAGNA/CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIE PARTY (Mar)—A willing Jaycee hosts this annual party each year. Several Jaycees bring original recipe lasagnas to share and then those who want enter their homemade chocolate chip cookies into the annual contest, fabulous prizes go to the winner!

SUNDAE PARTY (May)— Held the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend and hosted by Steve Halbach, this is a favorite of ice cream lovers. Come enjoy the unique homemade flavors in the company of Jaycees and friends.

WALKING TO SUPPORT A NON-PROFIT (May/Sept/Oct)– A new project this year. Come support a non-profit organization and help them raise money and awareness. At the same time you will be promoting the Jaycees and getting a little exercise. This year the we will be walking to support the American Cancer Society.

BASEBALL GAME (June)—Watch the Waterloo Bucks as a group at Riverfront Stadium.

PUTT PUTT TOURNAMENT (Aug)—Celebrate the end of the busy Jaycee summer with some good-natured competition. An 18-hole putt putt tournament is followed by dinner at a local restaurant and prizes to the winners…. and losers.

BICYCLE POKER RUN (Aug) – New project in 2007. Pedal your way throughout the Cedar Valley and receive a playing card at each designated stop. Best Poker hand wins a prize that is yet to be determined! This will be associated with Fall Membership Night.

MEMBERSHIP BBQ (Aug) – Welcoming new members into our chapter, serving great food and having a good time all at the same time!!! Potential for burnt bike riders depending on the weather!!!

HALLOWEEN PARTY (Oct)—Hosted by a Jaycee, come enjoy the Halloween spirit, good food and beverages; costumes preferred.

LIGHTHOUSE PARTY (Nov)—An annual event for years; old and new Jaycees gather for a night of pizza and drinks on the Wednesday night before Thanksgiving at the Lighthouse bar in Waterloo.

POST CHRISTMAS PARTY (Dec)—Come celebrate the season with your friends. A willing Jaycee hosts the party which includes great food and beverages and of course a white elephant gift…. time to get rid of those tacky gifts from last year.
